Infrared gelatin silver print\"><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Part of the statewide exhibition partnership \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomandcaptivity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom and Captivity,<\/a>\u201d \u201cHome Fires\u201d centers the narrative of the families and loved ones of incarcerated people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience of having a family member, loved one, or friend who has been through the carceral system, or having family history that involves incarceration, is very common. Nearly two-and-a-half million people are currently incarcerated in the United States; this number grows powerfully when family and friends at home are considered. However, this experience is not commonly shared outside of the family context. Incarceration can also encompass larger historical experiences while maintaining its personal impact. \u201cHome Fires\u201d presents the work of artists who have experienced incarceration in their immediate or more distant family, or who use this concept as a structural theme in their work, to shine a light on what incarceration can mean for those of us who have stayed at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHome Fires\u201d features the work of Gustavo and Gaelyn Aguilar (TUG Collective), Carol Ayoob, Julie K. Gray, Judy Glickman Lauder, Forrest Meyer, Mai Snow, Lauren Tosswill, and Kim Wilson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomandcaptivity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freedom and Captivity<\/a>,\u201d a statewide initiative that includes multiple exhibitions at museums, galleries, and universities throughout Maine, explores the use of captivity as a corollary to freedom by asking the question of why we imagine that the freedom of some is dependent on the captivity of others. \u201cHome Fires: Freedom and Captivity,\u201d is part of this curatorial project, including linked exhibitions and events at Maine\u2019s college campuses, as well as exhibitions and virtual events and performances throughout the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Home Fires: Freedom &amp; Captivity&quot; at the UNE Art Gallery, Portland Campus\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sNLMsaEXx3E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Home Fires October 22, 2021-January 23, 2022 Part of the statewide exhibition partnership \u201cFreedom and Captivity,\u201d \u201cHome Fires\u201d centers the narrative of the families and loved ones of incarcerated people.
