She grew up in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and started her running career there, after breaking her leg in a skiing accident as a teenager. She attended Bowdoin College. She has won the Boston marathon, the Chicago marathon and the women&#8217;s marathon at the Olympics. Samuelson has authored two books: her autobiography, <em>Running Tide<\/em>, and <em>Running for Women<\/em>.
