She was born March 29, 1915 in Brooklyn, New York to Polish and Russian immigrants, and never received more than a high school education. In 1950, she married Jose Yglesias, who was also an author. She became the literary editor at <em>The Nation<\/em> in 1965. Her first novel, <em>How She Died<\/em> was published in 1972. Her other published works were <em>Family Feeling<\/em> (1976), <em>Sweetsir<\/em> (1981), <em>The Saviors<\/em> (1987), and <em>The Girls<\/em> (1999).
