Biographical/Historical Note

Shay Stewart-Bouley was born in Chicago and relocated to Maine in 2002. A graduate of DePaul University and Antioch University New England, she is the executive director of Community Change, Inc., a Boston-based anti-racism organization, and has worked in the non-profit and social service sectors since 2007. In 2003, she began writing periodically for the Portland Press Herald and the Journal Tribune, and later that year launched her own monthly column in the Portland Phoenix, “Diverse-City,” which addresses diversity issues such as race, class, gender relations, sexual orientation, workplace issues, and lifestyle choices. In 2011, Stewart-Bouley was awarded a New England Press Association Award for her writing on these issues. In 2008 she began the blog “Black Girl in Maine” as a place to express her views and connect with other people of color in Maine and other northern New England states. In her blog she writes about race, class and social issues, as well as motherhood. She cites Studs Terkel as a strong influence in her quest to revive the art of storytelling. In December of 2011 Stewart-Bouley was named to Babble’s Top 100 Mom Bloggers of 2011.
