Biographical/Historical Note
William F. Bergen D.O. was born in Far Rockaway, New York in 1932. He received his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Detroit in 1953 and graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1959. After interning at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine, in 1961, Dr. Bergen opened his practice in Kennebunk, Maine where he would practice for 30 years. Dr. Bergen was an attending staff physician at Brighton Medical Center in Portland, Maine and served as a State Medical Examiner from 1975 to 1991. In 1991, Dr. Bergen moved to Alaska for 5 years providing medical care to the underserved community of the Kuskokwim Delta and the Yup’ik people. Upon his return in 1996, Dr. Bergen began practicing at the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, Maine. As Secretary and Trustee of the New England Foundation for Osteopathic Medicine and an active member of the osteopathic profession, Dr. Bergen was instrumental in the creation of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.
