Using Artificial Intelligence

Learn how to use AI to boost your research productivity ethically and responsibly.

How AI can Support Research

AI can help with each step of the research process. Use AI to brainstorm research topics or develop your research question, supply keywords for searching databases, summarize articles, or to clarify concepts. AI tools can help polish your writing, correct grammar, with statistical analysis, generate visuals you can use in your work, or be used as a personal tutor by creating flashcards and quizzes.

Choose the Right AI Tool

General AI programs can generate false but convincing information, citations, facts, or quotes that are not based on a real source. It may also not be appropriate to upload course materials or copyright-protected material to a general AI tool using a personal account. Choose the right AI research tool for academic research and evaluate generated information before you use it in your work.

UNE has approved research tools:

CoPilot
UNE provides access to Microsoft CoPilot, available through OKTA, for general AI use. CoPilot is integrated into Microsoft 365 applications.
Consensus
For AI-powered research, we provide access to Consensus. Unlike a general AI tools, Consensus is limited to only peer-reviewed sources and provides links to the original research.

Acknowledge AI Use

Acknowledge your use of AI in a disclosure statement in your methodology or an acknowledgments section of your paper. Include the tool used, the version, as well as the prompts given. See our citation style guides for specific guidance on AI disclosure and citation.

Example:
AI Usage Disclosure: This document was created with the assistance of [AI tool and version]. The AI was used to [describe use, include a link if possible]. All AI-generated content was reviewed for accuracy and author assumes full responsibility for the final content.
