Collection Scope and Content

The collection is one folder containing two letters from Gebert to former MWWC Curator Mary Anne Wallace, as well as a 2009 newspaper article about Gebert and her 2020 obituary. The collection also contains a photo of Gebert and a bookmark of her book.

Biographical/Historical Note

Avis Carter Gebert was born Avis Adella Carter on August 24, 1930 in East Corinth, Maine. She was the daughter of Mason Collyer Carter and Doris Adella Tate, and was raised in Woolwich, Maine. She graduated from Morse High School in Bath in 1948. She received a B.A. in Education from Boston Univeristy, and a Master’s in Education from SUNY New Paltz. Gebert taught elementary school at Bennett School in Boiceville, NY until 1986 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which she recovered from. As storyteller Grandma Avis, she entertained young children and their parents at the Woodstock Library and other venues. Gebert was descended from a line of Maine sea captains, and in 2009 she published her family letters and history in a book, “The Carters of Woolwich, Maine” by Trafford Publishing.
