Collection Scope and Content

This collection includes correspondence from Georgiana to her husband and her mother-in-law, and from her husband when he was in the Maine Senate. There are several verse manuscripts, one of which (“Dirge”) is signed by Georgiana Barrows. Also included are 2 sheets of music (one unsigned manuscript, one published piece of music by Edward Howe Jr.) There are several photographs, including one of Georgiana, her husband and children, taken circa 1890.

Biographical/Historical Note

Born in 1828, Georgiana Souther Barrows was the daughter of Samuel and Mary Webster Souther. She attended the Ladies Department of Fryeburg Academy and married George Bradley Barrows, a graduate of Dartmouth College in 1842. Georgiana and her husband, an influential state Republican and agriculturist, lived in Fryeburg, Maine. One of their children was Anna Barrows of Fryeburg, Maine, whose papers are in the Maine Women Writers Collection. She died in 1913.
