Collection Scope and Content

The 32 letters in the collection span the years 1809-1821. The first are from friends and addressed to Harriet Payson, her maiden name. After 1812, she is addressed as Mrs. Harriet Flagg. There is one letter that she wrote to Marian McLain in 1811; the rest of the correspondence is to her from P.E. Theobold, Mary M. Parker, Catherine Patton, Martha Hubbard, A. Chaland, Caroline Moore, Mary Sewell, E. Sewell, Daniel French, Nathaniel Coffin, Lucy Sedge, and Henry Flagg (brother-in-law?). The contents range from early letters with gossip about marriages to letters concerning money and deaths among family and friends.
