Biographical/Historical Note

Joan Benoit Samuelson is a well-known Maine long-distance runner. She grew up in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and started her running career there, after breaking her leg in a skiing accident as a teenager. She attended Bowdoin College. She has won the Boston marathon, the Chicago marathon and the women’s marathon at the Olympics. Samuelson has authored two books: her autobiography, Running Tide, and Running for Women. She currently resides in Freeport, Maine.
