Biographical/Historical Note

Louise Dickinson Rich was born in Huntington, Massachusetts in 1903. She taught English for several years before she married Ralph Rich and moved with him to the Maine woods. Her best known book We Took to the Woods was a best seller in 1942. After that she wrote other books about Maine and raising her children in Maine. She once wrote that “The only thing I really missed [in the Maine woods] was a library, and that I missed terribly.” She died at age 87 in 1991.
