Biographical/Historical Note

Phebe Anne Boyle was born in 1916 in Brooklyn, New York. Her family moved to Maine early in her childhood and she spent the 1920s and 30s in Kittery Point. Boyle completed hairdressing training in 1938 and taught at the Portsmouth Beauty School of Hair Design. She was very active in her community, even running for political office in 1957. Reading and poetry were very important to her from a young age and her award-winning poetry was published nationally. New England Echoes, her first book of poetry, was published in 1970 and Echo Two followed in 1975. Boyle died in 2009 at the age of 92.
