Borrowing Policies & Procedures
Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni & Clinical Affiliates may borrow an unlimited number of items from either of the two UNE Library Locations. Bring the library items you want to borrow to the front desk and show your UNE ID card.
Student library accounts are created automatically; new faculty and staff may need to confirm their accounts by contacting the Access Services Librarian on your campus:

You can return library items to either campus library at the front desk or using the book drop located outside the library front entrance. Items borrowed from other libraries may take a few days to record your return.
Renew, Overdues & Fines
Most items can be renewed if you need to keep them longer the original due date. Log into your library account to renew. You can also ask in person at the library front desk, by email, or by calling (207) 602-3000.
We will email your UNE email address if you do not return your library items on time. Make sure you are receiving emails from the library by checking spam or clutter filters regularly.
You are responsible for the UNE Library items you have borrowed. If something is lost or damaged, please contact us as soon as possible. We will work with you to find the best way to replace the item
We will send you an invoice for the replacement cost, plus a $15 processing fee, for library items not returned or renewed within 3 weeks of the due date. Course reserves will accrue a non-refundable $15 fine for every 24 hours they are overdue, up to the full replacement cost. You will not be able to borrow anything else from the library until you return overdue items or your fines are paid.
Holds & Recalls
Holds can be used to request books from the other UNE campus or books that you would like held at the front desk for you to pick up.
You can also place a hold on any item that someone else has already borrowed. When it is returned, we will check it out to you and email you to come pick it up at the library front desk. You can also borrow from another library.
Place a hold by using the “Request” button in the library catalog and choosing your pickup location. Available books will be ready within 2 business days; books already borrowed will be available upon their return.
Use UNE Interlibrary Loan to request articles from print or microfilm journals held at the other campus.
In rare cases we may need to get something back from you sooner than the original due date. If the item you have is required for course reserve, we may ask you to return it as soon as possible; you will still be able to use it in the library for 2 hours at a time. If we need you to bring something back early, we will send you an email with a new due date.
Borrow Beyond UNE
If you need something to which we don’t provide access, we can get it for you from another library.
You can also go in person go to any Maine Reciprocal Borrowing Program or Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities (GPACU) library and borrow using your UNE ID card.
